"I will never forget the evening I came over to Elizabeth and Ken’s apartment in New Rochelle to tell them I had -- what? All I remember is I plopped down in one of the armchairs and announced, 'The shit is about to hit the fan.'
I had tried to extricate myself from meetings gradually. I had met Tom in the diner and told him I wanted to go to lectures only. He said I could not go to lectures without going to practice sessions too. He said if he let me do that, then other people would want to do the same thing and he’d have to let them. So I settled and said OK, I would continue going to both sessions and lectures.
I called Tom from Elizabeth’s house -- felt my queasy stomach, took a deep breath and told him I was stopping meetings. This was one of the scariest phone calls I ever made of my entire life. But I did it. I knew I had to. I felt like I was saving my own life, saving my sanity, giving myself permission to have a life, setting myself free from prison. Setting myself free! I did it.
And it was over."
“Leaving The Light is a fast and compelling read. It is the inspiring chronicle of a young woman's struggle to honor her own perceptions and to find her voice in a setting where both were (and still are) forbidden.”
Pam Wood, Relationship Coach
“I am in awe and astounded by what Justy has had to go through to get where she is today! Her courage and perseverance are extraordinary. From the first page of the book, I felt a visceral feeling in my gut which stayed with me through the entire reading… Justy takes us on a deeply personal, courageous and vulnerable journey to the heart of a woman and reveals the strength of her soul's intuition. This is an amazing read for anyone who feels that they may be stuck and have no way out of a situation in their life. If Justy could do it given all the odds presented, anyone can do it.”
Azul Arco Iris, Intuitive Energy Healer
What is The Light?
"The Light is a cult that for all its pleasant, jacket-and-tie exterior, thrives on instilling deep fear, paranoia, shame and dread in its members from early childhood until death." The Light originated in London in the late 1920s and is now headquartered in Manhattan.

Not really impressed. It seemed that there was a lack of flow in the book and I feel frustrated at times trying to follow the time line. I know the author stated that she wrote this over a period of time, and so some recent reflections on past events would occur. However, I believe that a better style or format would improve the lack of cohesiveness.Product details

Leaving The Light and loving it Justine Renson 9781546684688 Books Reviews
The author of this book touched me deeply with her candid description of what damage a cult can do to a person's psyche, mind , soul , and self esteem as well as perverting our fundamental and innocent human need to go out and live and enjoy our lives and connect on an authentic level with our loved ones to attain true happiness. I was inspired by her bravery in leaving The Light and also by her unflinchingly and brutally honest analysis in her poetry of the damage and suffering caused to her by this cult. This was a very compelling read and a disturbing eye opener of how such cults operate to gain power over people by limiting access to the internet and outside world and veiling their nefarious intentions in a thick mantle of secrecy and propaganda.
This book will inspire you, and definitely make you feel! Justine is so easy to relate to even if the story she's telling is a bit different from yours. She lets herself be vulnerable, open, and honest. Very easy and very pleasant read. I strongly recommend it.
If you have been watching "The OA" or "The Path" or "The Leftovers," you will have already realized that life in a cult is part of a new story of our times. And it may not be that the story is so new, but the ability to TELL the story is new. And here is a book that tells the real life story of being born into a cult, growing up in a cult, marrying and bearing children in a cult, and finding the way through the brainwashing to actually escape. A truly courageous story about a real cult that still exists today.
Such an awesome book! What tremendous courage to write such open and personal accounts of what happened in your life. Hoping this is enlightening to and gives others in similar situations the courage to speak out and stand up for something if they don't feel it's right.
Good story, just too much info that didn't really seem to tie in with leaving. A lot of info about the group. Kind of scary what control these groups can have over people and they way they live.
Anyone who can escape a cult and all the harm and sickness that goes with any organization that tries to CONTROL your mind and life is amazing and stronger than the cult "zombies" / it is so WRONG!!! Good for Justine to leave, finally find herself and in turn be able to help others who leave.
Leaving the light is a very interesting book I had never heard of this cult before and I appreciated all of Justine's stories especially answering questions about The Light at the end of the book. It really amazes me what happens in life out there that I am not aware of. This is very eye-opening and inspirational read.
